About XM Studios:
Dialing Up the Future of Radio.
Picture 82 futuristic broadcast studios. Include a complex network
of fiber optics linking each studio to an unsurpassed library
of digital recordings - an archive with literally millions of
musical entries spanning every genre, already storing every known
recording in some categories, and growing daily. To coordinate
all this, throw in a control center that looks like an intergalactic
starship.
You've just imagined XM Radio's broadcast center in Washington,
D.C. - the largest and most advanced of its kind in the world.
Its sole purpose: to back our on-air talent and programmers with
the technical facilities to produce radio the way you want it.
Housed in a century-old former printing loft, the center takes
advantage of massively reinforced construction - which once supported
multi-ton press machinery - to create acoustically isolated broadcast
rooms and a live performance studio. For regional broadcasting
and location work, it's supplemented by studios in New York and
at the Country Music Hall of Fame in Nashville.
Live Artist Performances?
XM's broadcast center includes a 2,600-square-foot performance
studio for live recording and broadcast. Artists of all breeds — from
rock to opera, classical to country, bluegrass to blues-are stopping
by each week to perform exclusively for our listeners and make
musical history. The live performance studio can accommodate
an audience of 50 people or a 40-piece orchestra . Go inside
the studio.
How big is big?
With 20 multi-function production suites and 310 audio workstations
in addition to 82 studios, XM Radio's broadcast center has
150,000 square feet of space.
How quiet is quiet?
XM's massively dampened broadcast suites with "floating
construction" are virtually noiseless, anechoic chambers.
To hear your unamplified heartbeat without difficulty, just step
inside, push the heavily insulated door shut, and hold your breath.
Heavy metal without the metal?
Throughout the broadcast center, fiber optics and computer servers
replace traditional metallic wiring - for fully digital audio
signal processing.
Live from the Big Apple?
XM also has studios in mid-town Manhattan where shows on many
channels will originate.
Live from Nashville?
XM has a studio at the newly opened Country Music Hall of Fame,
from which we air daily shows and interviews with the stars
on multiple country music channels.
